Is ISKCON Hindu?

ISKCON belongs to the Gaudiaya Vaishnava sampradaya (denomination or tradition), a monotheistic tradition within Vedic or Hindu culture.

The word “Hindu” is not found in the ancient texts of India. The word originated as a designation for the people living in the vast regions east of the Sindhu River. Today,Hinduism has evolved into an umbrella term that refers to the “family of religions” based on the Vedic writings, including the major traditions Shaivism, Shaktism and Vaishnavism. Together, they make up the world’s third largest religion—today called Hinduism.

What is Hare Krishna Movement?

The Hare Krishna movement is designed to assist persons interested in reconnecting with Krishna (God) by offering them an opportunity for association of like-minded people. Members of ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna Consciousness) follow the teachings of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. There are temples and gatherings all over the world where people get together and chant, read and speak about Krishna and work together to revive their loving relationship with Him.

What is the mark on faces of Hare Krishna devotees?

Devotees of Krishna decorate their bodies with markings called tilaka.Tilaka is made from a mixture of sacred clay and water, and applied with the ring finger and/or with wooden stamps. Tilaka is meant to designate the body as a temple of the spirit within.

How do you recruit members? Do you allow everyone?

Anyone can be a member of this movement who is sincerely interested in participating in the process and connecting with Krishna. We try to spread the holy name by chanting in the streets, inviting people to feast and chant with us, and offering many spiritual books which will assist you in learning more about the philosophy and practice of Krishna consciousness.
